Travis New 43,McDowell County Man Who Alleged Police Assault Found Deceased In His Apartment
The McDowell County man who publicly alleged he was assaulted by a Welch police officer earlier this year was found dead Thursday. Deputies discovered the body of Travis New, 43, at a residence on Maple Terrace.
Sheriff James “Boomer” Muncy stated the death does not appear suspicious, and investigators found no immediate evidence of foul play. According to a news release, evidence at the scene suggests a drug overdose. “Based on the evidence collected at the scene, the death is believed to be consistent with a drug overdose,” the release stated.
Authorities reported finding suspected fentanyl and drug paraphernalia near New’s body and in his pockets. Interviews with other residents indicated New had exhibited recent behaviors consistent with drug use.
New’s body has been transported to the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an independent autopsy. The official cause and manner of death remain pending toxicology results and the Medical Examiner’s final report. The investigation remains open pending those findings.
New had previously filed a complaint against a Welch police officer, alleging an assault during an encounter in February. That separate incident remains under investigation by the West Virginia State Police.
